Today, I saw a Scissortail Flycatcher fluttering overhead as I sat waiting for the light to change in the intersection. It's one of those friendlier harbingers of spring here in central Oklahoma (the unfriendly one being severe weather and tornadoes). It's hard to believe it's that time of year already!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/105382199/crewel-embroidery-japanese-flowering?ref=shop_home_active_2" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/105382199/crewel-embroidery-japanese-flowering?ref=shop_home_active_2" border="0" height="257" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/004/0/5695926/il_570xN.360158906_d8e5.jpg" width="320" /></a>There are other reminders of spring around here, including my flowering plum tree, which looked like a giant ball of pink flowers until about a week ago. It was the model for my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/105382199/crewel-embroidery-japanese-flowering?ref=shop_home_active_2">hand-embroidered wall art</a>.<br />

The sun is already shining brighter than it was before, but the air is still cool and crisp, especially on a rainy day like today. It's sort of like the colors in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/103710942/robins-egg-and-roses-scarf-in-light-blue?ref=shop_home_active_24">this scarf</a>.<br />

<br />
As for me, I've been spring cleaning around my house these past two months, and it feels so much better! I don't know how I have managed to accumulate so much clutter, but I certainly have. It can catch up with you and overwhelm you. I'm working on being a little more "house proud."<br />
<br />
The first step has been to declutter. I have gotten rid of tons of paper I don't need any more (magazines from years ago, old records that I needed to shred, and clippings I just don't need to save). In the process, I found that a lot of what I have lying around is connected to negative or stress-inducing memories. I'm clearing that out, too. It's almost like an emotional spring cleaning! I didn't expect the feeling of freedom to be so instantaneous. If you feel your house pressing in around you, maybe you should try it.<br />
<br />
The second step, coming soon, will be to update my furnishings and surroundings. It feels so good to dream! It must be spring.</div>

I've been gone a lot these past few weekends, mostly for work, but this weekend I traveled across my home state with friends to see the Honey Creek battlefield, the site of a major Civil War conflict that decided my home state's position as a Union-held territory in the war. Most of the photos I took of the place are the "you had to be there" kind, but I had one I thought I'd share.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvgvBusceoCTZ8ti9qdC4Ulz4nuDn7UruxZVGGKtYUOi6m68ZZbOgeeFKl4WFklqEQRAKZxREMyERjguj_RRMXfdl233HTC9ZhLiGel6Df_Wi-W7cfVYJ9LIES4h3ebRqLFeT2BlxOrSY/s1600/CivilWarReenactors.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvgvBusceoCTZ8ti9qdC4Ulz4nuDn7UruxZVGGKtYUOi6m68ZZbOgeeFKl4WFklqEQRAKZxREMyERjguj_RRMXfdl233HTC9ZhLiGel6Df_Wi-W7cfVYJ9LIES4h3ebRqLFeT2BlxOrSY/s1600/CivilWarReenactors.jpg" height="295" width="320" /></a></div>
This was a group of Civil War reenactors who fired a cannon and marched around us into the parking lot at the dedication ceremony for the museum that is being built. I failed to get a picture of the cannon going off, but it is an experience you should have at least once in your life.<br />
<br />
The important take-away from that place is a tangible connection to the past. I walked where soldiers stood 151 years ago and I saw where the battle lines were once drawn. It is a part of this world that we shouldn't forget.<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
That's what vintage collecting is all about---keeping a connection to the past.</h3>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<br /></h4>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Everything I have curated in my stores is a connection like that. I don't have anything from the era of the Civil War (I imagine artifacts like that rarely end up in estate sales, anyway), but I have a couple that are much older than the rest. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/180000038/victorian-rose-gold-brooch-pin-with?ref=shop_home_active_6" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt=" " border="0" height="290" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/021/0/5695926/il_570xN.566609632_tdy4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/180000038/victorian-rose-gold-brooch-pin-with?ref=shop_home_active_6">rose gold stamped brooch</a> actually did come to me from an estate sale. I picked it out because the pin back just looked old to me and the color was unusual. After consulting with some vintage jewelry experts, I now know it dates to approximately the 1880s or 1890s. I sometimes find myself wondering what dress this pin once accessorized.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
This <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/167810704/miniature-dry-sink-salesman-sample?ref=shop_home_active_3">miniature dry sink</a> may also date to the very late 1800s, but I've conservatively dated it to the 1910s or 1920s. It hearkens back to the time when there was no indoor running water and all "washing up" had to be done in a washbasin with water that had been brought indoors. Of course, this is the tiny version of a normal American dry sink. It either served as a salesman's sample or as a "mommy and me" child's toy.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />I've only had one other true Victorian piece in my store, although it has since sold. If you want to know the story of the doll chamber pot, here is the link to my earlier blog post:</div>

For the past month I've been working on a major reorganization of my stores, my store room, and even my personal bookshelves. It's been such a huge project that I haven't been able to post about the major holidays over the past few weeks. I really hope if you haven't finished your gift purchasing (say, for Father's Day or a birthday) that you'll pay me a visit with enough time to allow for shipping!<br />
<br />
It has occurred to me that the "visual clutter" I have recently removed from my stores may have been keeping you from seeing some of the great things I have. I thought I'd pop in today and show you some of the things you might have forgotten about, and tell you their stories.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2426601/learn_to_read_nouveau_bookmark__red_and_tan/handmade/paper_books/bookmarks/paper" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2426601/learn_to_read_nouveau_bookmark__red_and_tan/handmade/paper_books/bookmarks/paper" border="0" src="http://www.artfire.com/uploads/product/1/601/26601/2426601/2426601/large/learn_to_read_nouveau_bookmark_red_and_tan_95982baf.jpg" height="400" width="313" /></a></div>
A few years ago, I used my printmaking knowledge to carve and hand-print two designs of bookmarks. The first one is the first part of a Victor Hugo quotation I happen to like: "To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." It was a way of uniting my two loves--writing (and by extension, reading), and fine art. I invented my own smoke and flames inspired script for this <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2426601/learn_to_read_nouveau_bookmark__red_and_tan/handmade/paper_books/bookmarks/paper">bookmark</a>. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2102759/blue_nouveau_botanical_bookmark--hand_printed_on_blue_paper/handmade/paper_books/other_" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2102759/blue_nouveau_botanical_bookmark--hand_printed_on_blue_paper/handmade/paper_books/other_" border="0" src="http://www.artfire.com/uploads/product/9/759/2759/2102759/2102759/large/blue_nouveau_botanical_bookmark_hand_printed_on_blue_paper_d6999054.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
My other <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2102759/blue_nouveau_botanical_bookmark--hand_printed_on_blue_paper/handmade/paper_books/other_">bookmark</a> design depicts a type of grass in an Art Nouveau style. I found a lovely tile motif in an old book on the New York Museum of Art website and decided to copy the lines of it. It was almost too delicate to cut out! These two bookmarks share the same plate, incidentally, and have to be cut apart after I ink them and apply the paper in the Japanese style.<br />
I printed them in four color/paper combinations (three of which I still
have). Unfortunately, there are few people in the world who appreciate a
handmade bookmark when commercial ones are so easy to come by. If you
are interested in something really special, they are all in the "<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/CandyAppleCrafts/1/7/16069//">Books and Bookmarks</a>" section of my Artfire store.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/3001161/large_original_abstract_monotypeer_print__undersea_nautical_scene/fine_art/printmaking/monotype" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/3001161/large_original_abstract_monotypeer_print__undersea_nautical_scene/fine_art/printmaking/monotype" border="0" src="http://www.artfire.com/uploads/product/1/161/1161/3001161/3001161/large/large_original_abstract_monotypeer_print_undersea_nautical_scene_aa93593a.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
Speaking of printmaking, I made this aquatic themed print in college. Yes, it does reflect my early interest in Art Nouveau and jellyfish. This was made using a technique called Monotype, which involved painting ink on smooth plates, removing layers of ink with tools, inking the plate again to layer the colors, drawing with colored pencil, etc. It can only be printed once per composition, unlike the bookmarks above, so whoever comes to own this one, called "<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/3001161/large_original_abstract_monotypeer_print__undersea_nautical_scene/fine_art/printmaking/monotype">The Reef After Dark</a>," will have an exclusive piece of art.<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/105382199/crewel-embroidery-japanese-flowering?ref=shop_home_active_1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/105382199/crewel-embroidery-japanese-flowering?ref=shop_home_active_1" border="0" height="321" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/004/0/5695926/il_570xN.360158906_d8e5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Here is another early handmade item from my stores. I have a Japanese flowering plum in my front yard, and I think it's gorgeous in the spring. I decided to draw and hand-stitch a cluster of flowers on the end of a branch, using satin stitches, back stitching, French knots, and more. It took forever! If you like this one-of-a-kind piece, you can <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/105382199/crewel-embroidery-japanese-flowering?ref=shop_home_active_1">buy it here</a>.<br />

I also have recently moved this little <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/321427418348?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649">piece of rustic-style felt art </a>to Ebay. It is all hand-stitched and dates to my junior high days. I was using a pattern, but I must say my success with it may be an origin for <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CandyAppleCrafts?section_id=6627644&ref=shopsection_leftnav_1">my pom pom animal line</a>, which you may be very familiar with.<br />

<br />
Yesterday, I posted on my Facebook fanpage about a decoupage project I made with friends over the weekend, just to get out of a crafting rut. I used a cardboard box I had purchased nearly a decade before to decorate, and layered on magazine clippings about Hawaii, circulated stamps from Micronesia, and a few vintage crate label prints from an old calendar. I'm not really serious about opening a decoupage line of products in my store (unless you ask, lol) but I plan to post a picture of my project over there if you'd like to stop by and leave a comment.<br />
<br />
I am considering drawing some iron-on embroidery transfers and selling them as kits, because doing it myself would require me to charge pretty high prices for my time. Would any of my readers be interested?<br />

There are spring flowers and new leaves are gleaming in the bright sunshine around here. It makes me want to wear and decorate with bright colors, and throw open the windows to let in the sunshine. Mother's Day in the US is right around the corner, it's the peak of wedding season, and it's May birthday season, too. It's easy to find a good excuse to break out the flowers!<br />
<br />
Here are a few of my favorite floral things from what I have on hand; I am preparing to list more in coming days:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/187565016/vera-neumann-silk-scarf-peach-and-blue?ref=shop_home_active_17" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/187565016/vera-neumann-silk-scarf-peach-and-blue?ref=shop_home_active_17" border="0" height="297" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/032/1/5695926/il_570xN.594977415_nrkj.jpg" width="400" /></a> This vintage <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/187565016/vera-neumann-silk-scarf-peach-and-blue?ref=shop_home_active_17">Vera Neumann scarf </a>is fabulous! It is from the late 60s, and has never been worn (it still has the store tag on it). The print looks like peach pink and red Azaeleas with turquoise leaves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/126827254/citrus-flowers-ceramic-plaque-orange?ref=shop_home_active_20" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/126827254/citrus-flowers-ceramic-plaque-orange?ref=shop_home_active_20" border="0" height="400" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/016/2/5695926/il_570xN.439440014_8jh6.jpg" width="261" /></a></div>
This <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/126827254/citrus-flowers-ceramic-plaque-orange?ref=shop_home_active_20">70s era ceramic citrus floral wall plaque</a> is the perfect way to brighten up a narrow strip of wall, perhaps in a kitchen. It has a hanger already attached to the back. I believe if this is not Lefton, it is a quality imitator.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2626806/sepia_and_blue_floral_scarf/vintage/accessories/scarfs___shawls" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2626806/sepia_and_blue_floral_scarf/vintage/accessories/scarfs___shawls" border="0" src="http://www.artfire.com/uploads/product/6/806/26806/2626806/2626806/large/sepia_and_blue_floral_scarf_2be215d2.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
This <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2626806/sepia_and_blue_floral_scarf/vintage/accessories/scarfs___shawls">silk scarf </a>has a more neutral color palette, but that light blue still feels like spring to me--in the winter, it seems like the sky is always gray.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/172311540/designer-floral-psychedelic-necktie?ref=shop_home_active_24" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/172311540/designer-floral-psychedelic-necktie?ref=shop_home_active_24" border="0" height="400" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/017/1/5695926/il_570xN.537840352_47nj.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
This <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/172311540/designer-floral-psychedelic-necktie?ref=shop_home_active_24">men's Hardy Amies necktie</a> has bright colors that remind me of flowers, but the pattern still has a masculine edge to it. A daring man could totally pull this off with a gray suit and a coordinating shirt.<br />

This selection of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/150013064/floral-mother-birthday-card-set-of-5-red?ref=shop_home_feat_1">50s-70s era birthday cards </a>will help you get prepared for Mom's birthday this year. Some of them can be used for other people's birthdays, as well. They don't all mention mother in the messages on them, and only one has some writing on it.<br />
<br />
<br />
I am only scratching the surface of what I have in stock. Floral themes are eternally popular and I don't think they ever go out of style. Many flowers also carry a special symbolic meaning (rooted in Victorian and ancient traditions), which makes them great gifts. Hope you'll stop by!<br />
<br />
Curious about the traditional meanings of certain types of flowers? Here's an interesting link you can explore:<br />

Last week, I worked on taxes any time I had a break from my other obligations, and now, at last...<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b>I'm finished!</b></h2>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm celebrating by offering a 20% off coupon in my Artfire and Etsy stores. Just use coupon code:<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: #990000;"><b> TAX20 </b> </span></h2>
<br />
It's good through the end of April, and works on anything over $7!<br />
<br />
If you have your eye on something in my eCrater store and would like the discount, you'll have to write to me, because that store doesn't have coupon capability. I'll have to mark it down manually for you...but I'd be happy to do that!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/186688430/mondrian-minimalist-print-scarf-silk?ref=shop_home_active_1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/186688430/mondrian-minimalist-print-scarf-silk?ref=shop_home_active_1" border="0" height="400" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/034/1/5695926/il_570xN.591382819_60y9.jpg" width="315" /></a></div>
So, after shaking off the bookkeeping brain-stupor, I have started photographing and listing things again. My plan is to try to get something new into the store on a daily basis, so stay tuned!<br />
<br />
Here is my newest listing, from today. This scarf has a minimalist, modern art kind of print, with primary color blocks and boxes on a tan background. <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/186688430/mondrian-minimalist-print-scarf-silk?ref=shop_home_active_1">Follow the link </a>to see it flat. If you like it, it's eligible for the coupon code. Just sayin'...</div>

This has possibly been one of the most brutal winters in several decades in the US. In fact, even as I write this, the air outside my window is below freezing, and there is snow on the ground. My area usually gets rain in March, and lots of wind, so what is with this weather?<br />
<br />
Nevertheless, spring is coming! The robins are back in my neighborhood, the crocuses have sprouted, and I keep seeing flocks of geese flying north again. I am so ready for those warmer temperatures and greener landscapes!<br />
<br />
I've been restocking my stores this week with bright and pastel colors, for those desperate for some sunshine and flowers. I know how you feel!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I listed this <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/176437000/gauzy-pastel-floral-scarf-yellow-pink?ref=shop_home_active_9">beautiful floral chiffon scarf </a>a few weeks ago. It has already been favorited by 25 people on Etsy and pinned a few times on Pinterest--good signs I won't have it for long!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/181515484/striped-chiffon-scarf-light-olive-green?ref=shop_home_active_1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/181515484/striped-chiffon-scarf-light-olive-green?ref=shop_home_active_1" border="0" height="400" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/033/2/5695926/il_570xN.572301273_to7k.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
I recently acquired several solid colored chiffon scarves in spring colors. Chiffon is
breezy for the warmer temps, and transitions well into the summer and
fall. This <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/181504914/royal-grafton-demitasse-set-orange-flat?ref=listing-shop-header-2">light olive green scarf </a>is very long and rectangular, with opaque stripes and sheer panels that virtually disappear against your skin! Makes me think of <i>erin go bragh</i> and St. Patrick's Day, as well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/181504914/royal-grafton-demitasse-set-orange-flat?ref=listing-shop-header-2" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/181504914/royal-grafton-demitasse-set-orange-flat?ref=listing-shop-header-2" border="0" height="311" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/022/0/5695926/il_570xN.572139074_nzs4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This little <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/181504914/royal-grafton-demitasse-set-orange-flat?ref=listing-shop-header-2">Royal Grafton demitasse cup and saucer</a> will brighten your day! Could you believe it dates to the late 1950s? I love that orange color on the cup.<br />

<a href="https://img1.etsystatic.com/044/0/5695926/il_570xN.517041783_4f80.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/166878812/70s-painted-plaque-cute-big-eyed-boy?ref=shop_home_active_3" border="0" height="640" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/044/0/5695926/il_570xN.517041783_4f80.jpg" title="" width="412" /></a><span id="goog_1401676844"></span></div>
If you're still not cheered, maybe the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/166878812/70s-painted-plaque-cute-big-eyed-boy?ref=shop_home_active_14">little boy on this plaque</a> can manage it (or his little mouse and bird friends).<br />

Or perhaps <a href="http://candyapplecrafts.ecrater.com/p/15528942/on-sale-20-off-cartoon-plaque-cute">the little boy on this plaque</a> can brighten up your nursery room, when the spring rain comes.<br />

This <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/123563726/duck-in-the-rain-figurine-porcelain-rain?ref=shop_home_feat_2">little duck figurine</a> will put you in a good mood about spring rain, as well.<br />

With spring rains comes Easter, and new baby animals! I have some real wild bunnies living in my back yard, but this <a href="http://candyapplecrafts.ecrater.com/p/15958321/pink-rabbit-glass-candle-holder">pink lead crystal one</a> is pretty cute, too.<br />

Of course, all of this spring talk makes me think of Bambi. Isn't this <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/CandyAppleCrafts/8765857/doe_and_fawn_figurine_art_deco_style_avon_gallery_originals_white/vintage/ceramics_and_pottery/home_decor">all-white Art Deco doe and fawn statue</a> pretty? It is from Gallery Originals, which as it turns out, is a limited-edition division of Avon products.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/93769379/hull-pheasant-bird-planter-vibrant?ref=shop_home_active_10" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/93769379/hull-pheasant-bird-planter-vibrant?ref=shop_home_active_10" border="0" height="310" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/016/2/5695926/il_570xN.456252751_tqq5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
If all of this spring talk has got you hankering for some green leaves and flowers, you could consider growing some, indoors, in a planter like this <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/93769379/hull-pheasant-bird-planter-vibrant?ref=shop_home_active_10">gorgeous Hull pheasant planter</a><span id="goog_1401676783"></span><span id="goog_1401676784"></span>!<br />
<br />
<br />
Well, that's enough for today. I need to get back to listing some more springtime beauties...after all, I hear another snowstorm is moving into my area today...</div>

Although social letter writing has declined in recent years, it is still a special thing to dig through a pile of envelopes addressed to "current resident" and find one personally written to you! It is still a fairly inexpensive bit of fun in a world where cheap, clean fun is a rare commodity, and there is a certain rawness and genuineness to the handwritten note that you can't find in emails and texts.<br />
<br />
If you are thinking of taking up letter writing in 2014, I have vintage stationery you can use, covering every topic from birthdays and special congratulations to thinking of you cards and get well soon notes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/178761914/cute-kitschy-vintage-card-set-pastel?ref=shop_home_active_2" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/178761914/cute-kitschy-vintage-card-set-pastel?ref=shop_home_active_2" border="0" height="327" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/044/1/5695926/il_570xN.562067743_b2e3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Here are <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/178761914/cute-kitschy-vintage-card-set-pastel?ref=shop_home_active_2">some cute cards, mostly birthday themed</a>, for the girlie girls you might know. These are from the 60s or 70s.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/177904125/7-assorted-stationery-cards-holly-hobbie?ref=shop_home_active_11" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/177904125/7-assorted-stationery-cards-holly-hobbie?ref=shop_home_active_11" border="0" height="251" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/034/0/5695926/il_570xN.558881547_3jdz.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This set has a lot more variety of messages, including "thinking of you" type cards. They aren't officially marked as such, but they definitely are inspired by the Holly Hobbie art style of the 70s and 80s. <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/177904125/7-assorted-stationery-cards-holly-hobbie?ref=shop_home_active_11">Find them here.</a><br />

The bird portrayed on this <a href="http://candyapplecrafts.ecrater.com/p/17897890/block-print-loon-bird-stationery">set of block print cards</a> is a North American Loon, and these cards are blank inside, so you can figure out what you want to say with them. These are hand-printed cards by famous artist Gwen Frostic. They are still wrapped up in their original packaging, with matching envelopes. <br />

Finally, if you're really interested in letter writing the old-fashioned way, I have a cool set of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/153953280/two-vintage-dip-calligraphy-pens-carved?ref=shop_home_active_11">50s/60s era bamboo dip pens</a> you can use. I have quite a few sets of vintage stationery not represented here, but you can find them by following the links throughout this post!<br />

Many people these days have developed a taste for vintage fashions and perhaps enjoy mixing and matching the old with the new. Some of the old fashions are "current" again, like skinny jeans, bow-necked blouses, or sheath dresses. The casual observer might not even realize that an article of clothing is from another time!<br />
<br />
The main difficulty I encounter when I look for vintage clothing is a problem with fit, and I think that's an issue for a whole lot of people. The sleeves are too loose, the bustline or chest is too full, the waist is too long, etc. We could alter the old garments, or we could sew something to measure, using a vintage sewing pattern!<br />
<br />
I have recently acquired a number of vintage patterns and I've been adding them to my stores a few at a time, after I've gone through them to check for condition issues and missing pieces or instructions. Stay tuned for more, and don't forget to tell your friends if they like to sew! Meanwhile, here are a few to choose from.<br />

Like tunic length shirts, but the ones you find are always too long, or the sleeves bind under the arms? <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/CandyAppleCrafts/8422359/pullover_comfy_tunic_top_pattern_misses_size_8_simplicity_6365_/vintage/supplies/sewing_patterns">This blouse pattern from the 80s </a>(actually borrowing from a late 40s design), can help you with both problems. Looks very comfortable! I really like views 2 and 3 on the front.<br />

This fabulous <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/176987284/vogue-top-and-skirt-pattern-9607-madmen?ref=shop_home_active_2">top and skirt pattern</a> from Vogue masquerades as a dress with a late 50s/early 60s style about it. I seriously love the view in yellow!<br />

These designer patterns are selling quickly. I put a Calvin Klein pattern here on 1/25 and it sold immediately!<br />

Maybe you are more interested in vintage sewing patterns for costume appeal. This <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/170052372/edwardian-sleepdress-gown-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_9">Edwardian nightgown pattern </a>will appeal to the Downton Abbey fans among us, because it was designed from clothing from that time period. It has a very wide range of size options, and it has never been cut!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/177009326/long-sleeve-blouson-top-pattern-loose?ref=listing-shop-header-0" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/177009326/long-sleeve-blouson-top-pattern-loose?ref=listing-shop-header-0" border="0" height="400" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/028/1/5695926/il_570xN.555395758_88ea.jpg" width="262" /></a></div>
This<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/177009326/long-sleeve-blouson-top-pattern-loose?ref=listing-shop-header-0"> blouson shirt pattern</a> is more like the fashions from the current season of Downton Abbey, which takes place in the late 20s. The pattern itself dates to the 70s, but i see it regularly these days, often paired with skinny leg pants and flats!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For the teens, I do have some juniors patterns, like this <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/170715958/yoked-pullover-sundress-pattern-young?ref=related-4&is_wholesale=0">sundress pattern from the 70s</a>, drawing upon the country girl image. This one has never been cut!<br />

I also have quite a few patterns for babies and toddlers, like this darling<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/CandyAppleCrafts/5765320/mccalls_pattern_4496_baby_overalls_shirt_reversible_bib_3_months/vintage/supplies/sewing_patterns"> infant bib and overalls pattern</a>. The pieces are so tiny!<br />
<br />
I hope you've enjoyed this little tour of my pattern collection. If you like a pattern but it isn't in your size, you might want to check out a pattern resizing tutorial like <a href="http://sew-misunderstood.blogspot.com/2011/09/new-plus-size-sewing-tutorial-mini.html">this one, for converting to plus-sizes</a>, or read the <a href="http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/sewingclasses/board.pl?t=27563">discussions in this forum</a> about how to convert vintage patterns for unusual body types and figure issues. I'm sure there are other useful links from around the web--I'd love to hear about them!<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading! Don't forget to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CandyAppleCrafts">follow me on Facebook</a>, where I'll be posting links to more sewing related paraphernalia as I make it available.</div>

Christmas has come and gone, and I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! Now that we are approaching the end of the year, I'm sure that all of you are looking forward at the new year ahead of us, and making plans and resolutions. I hope it will be a year of good things for all of you!<br />
<br />
I have decided to kick off the new year with a sale! It is officially marked on items in the artwork and home decor section of my Etsy store, but I have been doing some markdowns in other stores as well.<br />
<br />
When the USPS raises their shipping rates again in January, these items will probably be more significantly affected than some of the other sections of the store (because they tend to be heavier). That seems like a good incentive to buy now, before they end up costing you more (and while you can benefit from the sale price as well).<br />
<br />
Here are some highlights from the sale (while supplies last!):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/94198225/on-sale-teal-blue-glass-candle-holder?ref=shop_home_feat" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/94198225/on-sale-teal-blue-glass-candle-holder?ref=shop_home_feat" border="0" height="327" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/037/0/5695926/il_570xN.543642945_jtgl.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
These <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/94198225/on-sale-teal-blue-glass-candle-holder?ref=shop_home_feat">Morgantown blown glass "patio lights" from the Federal pattern</a> are greatly discounted! Made in the 50s, these pieces have a peacock blue color and a clear, bell ring because they are leaded glass.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/158788817/on-sale-rare-salesman-sample-metal-bowl" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/158788817/on-sale-rare-salesman-sample-metal-bowl" border="0" height="400" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/024/0/5695926/il_570xN.543643255_tmza.jpg" width="232" /></a></div>
This extremely rare (possibly one of a kind!) <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/158788817/on-sale-rare-salesman-sample-metal-bowl">Jeanette Iris and Herringbone pattern metal bowl </a>is very deeply discounted, about $85 off. My research uncovered one example each of solid metal bowls like this, in other Jeanette patterns, although there is no record of glass companies making metal bowls at all! It must be some kind of salesman sample or mockup, made of an unknown pitted and worn metal. Follow the link to read more about it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/160837094/on-sale-american-tourister-luggage-light?ref=listing-shop-header-0" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/160837094/on-sale-american-tourister-luggage-light?ref=listing-shop-header-0" border="0" height="262" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/040/0/5695926/il_570xN.543642559_f11p.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Did you wish you had a more stylish carry-on than a ratty backpack during your holiday travels this season? Here is an affordable <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/160837094/on-sale-american-tourister-luggage-light?ref=listing-shop-header-0">powder blue American Tourister bag from the early 80s</a>. It is quite roomy, but fits perfectly into an overhead bin!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/126812245/on-sale-framed-needlepoint-butterfly?ref=shop_home_active" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.etsy.com/listing/126812245/on-sale-framed-needlepoint-butterfly?ref=shop_home_active" border="0" height="323" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/018/0/5695926/il_570xN.543643075_ojzv.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Looking for something to dress up the room for spring? How about this <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/126812245/on-sale-framed-needlepoint-butterfly?ref=shop_home_active">framed butterfly needlepoint tapestry</a>, probably from the 50s or 60s.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2698850/vintage_metlox_poppytrail_red_rooster_salt_and_pepper_shakers/vintage/kitchen___serving/misc_/salt___pepper_shakers" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2698850/vintage_metlox_poppytrail_red_rooster_salt_and_pepper_shakers/vintage/kitchen___serving/misc_/salt___pepper_shakers" border="0" height="400" src="http://www.artfire.com/uploads/product/0/850/98850/2698850/2698850/large/metlox_poppytrail_red_rooster_salt_and_pepper_shakers_vintage_fc088a3e.jpg" width="301" /></a></div>
And now for one of the "less advertised" sales. This pretty set of <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/candyapplecrafts/2698850/vintage_metlox_poppytrail_red_rooster_salt_and_pepper_shakers/vintage/kitchen___serving/misc_/salt___pepper_shakers">Metlox Red Rooster pattern salt and pepper shakers</a> has been marked down AND set for free US shipping (all other shipping destinations have discounted shipping rates, as well).<br />

I just marked down this attractive pair of <a href="http://candyapplecrafts.ecrater.com/p/15754131/on-sale-pair-english-wall-chargers">metal wall chargers from England</a>, made in the medieval style. They are now 20% off!<br />

Christmas is right around the corner, and naturally, customers have begun to worry that they won't get their gifts in time. No need to worry. I am keeping an eye on the clock and I know the postal service's shipping cutoff dates!<br />
<br />
For international orders, <b>the last day to ship your order for Christmas is tomorrow, December 9th</b>! After that, it gets more expensive than you probably want to mess with. If I find your order too late, I'll rush it out, but I can't make any promises. Don't delay!<br />
<br />
For US customers, the dates to watch are <b>December 14th </b>for most heavy packages<b> (marked "Standard Post" in the listing)</b>, and <b>December 20th </b>for all of my lighter packages<b> (Marked "US First Class").</b><br />
<br />
So, let's get shopping!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, but the warmth of harvest colors and themes of plenty are the kind of thing I'd like to keep around all year. If you are in the market for something special this year, you should drop by, but don't wait too long. As of writing this, I can ship these anywhere in the US in time for Thanksgiving, but that window is closing. Please allow 10 postal days, based on the postal service recommendations.<br />

I recently thumbed through my unlisted vintage merchandise, and realized that I needed a little variety for the next few months...so I went vintage shopping!<br />
<br />
Here is a preview of my "haul." I don't usually post things like this. Between working 3 jobs and finding boxes to ship things in, I can sometimes seem tediously slow about getting things listed and available to customers (sorry). However, if you see something in this post that you really, really want for Christmas, go ahead and lay on the pressure. The squeakiest wheel gets the grease around here.<br />
<br />
I decided to break from my pattern and share with you today, because I think I found some pretty awesome things. I hope you'll agree! <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtgp80WbVfdwxKbGCQhaXQpf_-hDHmbjhWK0PZl4a9IOJb7UT7ElgLcWSdHjaRG_l4Yu_0g_vEoetK69BN4aaTkbQJJ6Dw0vWgVA0Z9U3-pRu-pJQdL_Ym48qIICVgJtF8e2Oa0WjUn2I/s1600/Haul10-2013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtgp80WbVfdwxKbGCQhaXQpf_-hDHmbjhWK0PZl4a9IOJb7UT7ElgLcWSdHjaRG_l4Yu_0g_vEoetK69BN4aaTkbQJJ6Dw0vWgVA0Z9U3-pRu-pJQdL_Ym48qIICVgJtF8e2Oa0WjUn2I/s320/Haul10-2013.jpg" width="271" /></a><br />
Here's pretty much the whole "take" for the past two weeks. There were a couple of other things I had to leave out because they wouldn't fit in the photo or they had already been listed, but I'll share them at the end of the post.<br />
<br />
The eras range pretty wildly here, from the turn of the century to the 80s, but I tend to gravitate toward things that predate the 80s. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizatW90s6jbbFFD2zuBAHA-f0kmgxZms5hftqvdf_2HTlLpCIg2Cx80cDaMHsxIdFPIfROdpOJdIIhxBQruVzOxKuFMOi2KeNf5lXdwjdzA7w2Jiav5PtMNbzAZ22mfkKgD9f2LPB0yQI/s1600/MiniatureDrySink.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizatW90s6jbbFFD2zuBAHA-f0kmgxZms5hftqvdf_2HTlLpCIg2Cx80cDaMHsxIdFPIfROdpOJdIIhxBQruVzOxKuFMOi2KeNf5lXdwjdzA7w2Jiav5PtMNbzAZ22mfkKgD9f2LPB0yQI/s200/MiniatureDrySink.jpg" width="200" /></a>The most intriguing thing is the little dry sink on the left side of the picture. Early research indicates that it is a salesman's sample or child-sized piece of furniture. It has a working drawer and a large compartment in the bottom behind the two doors, with a swivel latch to keep it closed. The knobs are made of milk glass. I think it may be the oldest thing I brought home. Specimens like it seem to date to the turn of the century or maybe the 20s. I think I've seen something like this on Antiques Roadshow before.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAELbcLVccXhJmaJOo2-Ge0InegyS3IhIsoj5RTOB1GC4wpnJznlCnKhHnVS0M2GJFel9KGn6FZxNHyTn5umDtrMN5CWq8lvjN2L5UNBxVC0ZgOBHHfYo7LPUb5lrcFuFSF1AsP699FyE/s1600/HaulDetail1+10-2013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAELbcLVccXhJmaJOo2-Ge0InegyS3IhIsoj5RTOB1GC4wpnJznlCnKhHnVS0M2GJFel9KGn6FZxNHyTn5umDtrMN5CWq8lvjN2L5UNBxVC0ZgOBHHfYo7LPUb5lrcFuFSF1AsP699FyE/s320/HaulDetail1+10-2013.jpg" width="320" /></a>The other piece of furniture you see is a small house-shaped curio shelf. I have sold two other curio shelves over the years, including one really large house-shaped shelf. They are popular for the miniature collectors especially, since the slots could almost serve as "rooms" to display tiny furniture and dolls. Of course, you don't have to limit yourself to that if you have another collection you'd like to display. I think this is probably from the 80s. I filled it with the jewelry I picked up recently.<br />
<br />
There were two "looper looms" from the 60s or 70s that I bought just for the nostalgia of the things. Everything from the packaging to the instructions is super retro and might bring back some childhood memories. I owned a later version of these when I was young, but mine was all plastic and the hook broke (these have metal parts).<br />
<br />
Last weekend, I picked up a couple of beautiful teacups from a lady whose mother had collected them for years. I haven't done enough research yet to be able to estimate age yet. They have labels, though, and that will help me learn more about them. I should be able to list them soon.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRRZxCcxlMy4X9_k_asaOa1kRa98koJ3UXtXIzlP3DpOqmMV1QX8fNA_iYZ2fzC_iQIHJiHe-nTUOKJlIRJKS_EYrIdWtM2hoRNnax-hldAYXkMOWAcLqOnim2YkR5e-gz_hOh3pOhNbQ/s1600/HaulDetail2+10-2013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRRZxCcxlMy4X9_k_asaOa1kRa98koJ3UXtXIzlP3DpOqmMV1QX8fNA_iYZ2fzC_iQIHJiHe-nTUOKJlIRJKS_EYrIdWtM2hoRNnax-hldAYXkMOWAcLqOnim2YkR5e-gz_hOh3pOhNbQ/s320/HaulDetail2+10-2013.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
The plate next to them is a souvenir plate from Germany, showing a map of the Rhineland. I don't know much about that one either, but it seems to be Bavarian, based on the china markings on the back. <br />
<br />
I'm sure you've noticed the large numbers of unused vintage cards on the table. These all came from one old stationery box I picked up. It was like opening a time capsule; the cards on the top came from the 70s, and as I removed the layers, I got down to several that look like they came from the 40s and 50s. Some had not even been folded in half yet, like the 50s-era Christmas cards in this photo.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidnwddSHjnpstvEfPNU_eWwJFmWRi4gAj5p3uklPZ4KzsDEBKjXkamV-hkSprqRkax3VQW0esvBVlwIIbDpugE5qObCxiqhSy5Hta1wsdhfYKg-yuOtcfof3bdacaIf7BUBt_wyYROmmI/s1600/HaulDetail3+10-2013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidnwddSHjnpstvEfPNU_eWwJFmWRi4gAj5p3uklPZ4KzsDEBKjXkamV-hkSprqRkax3VQW0esvBVlwIIbDpugE5qObCxiqhSy5Hta1wsdhfYKg-yuOtcfof3bdacaIf7BUBt_wyYROmmI/s320/HaulDetail3+10-2013.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
I also found a clear plastic sewing box (shown in the back), several small pieces of 70s-80s jewelry, and two men's skinny ties from the 50s. One of the ties is embroidered with pine trees and parachutes. There must be a story there! The other tie is a sharp looking red and black geometric number. There was also a 70s-era Berrie figurine and a large Christmas metal platter with a 60s/early 70s Santa and Mrs. Claus that I just had to bring it home! Sorry, I forgot to get closeups of some of these.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-RQ2UIbdGUzJYy6VQopBJJgexyyHUTi65M9Mjm9M6MfsDP53b73R9WiEfZsRwIj70COH8j7SjSRPWQlOJaP_-8lWJNg6dblXwoydTQKNWiJRwagsimY5fuwAnYRvYcanjul8GvLEgbKU/s1600/Haul+Art2+10-2013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-RQ2UIbdGUzJYy6VQopBJJgexyyHUTi65M9Mjm9M6MfsDP53b73R9WiEfZsRwIj70COH8j7SjSRPWQlOJaP_-8lWJNg6dblXwoydTQKNWiJRwagsimY5fuwAnYRvYcanjul8GvLEgbKU/s200/Haul+Art2+10-2013.jpg" width="150" /></a>Finally, I found three intriguing works of art I thought my customers might like (or at least I found them interesting). One is a galleried print of a pink flower, with a limited edition number and the artist's signature on the front and on the back. It looks a bit like a linocut to me, but it would have to be made from four different blocks that had been inked separately and fitted together like puzzle pieces. I though the colors and textures were simple but striking, so I picked it up. It may or may not be vintage (it depends on what I'm able to find out about it).<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtXsejDWs6QE306N9wgGqMNrhhVWD_TmInPqCjIFoQOG26VUEep30pVWtFL8Hmd5Xo62I7t-Vxm8tmXIKfy156InSVZSCD4qi3rknsGYr-7Oj69WGU8PIJZ6VFi0V1xJ6SqLvqCPHdDvs/s1600/Haul+Art+10-2013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtXsejDWs6QE306N9wgGqMNrhhVWD_TmInPqCjIFoQOG26VUEep30pVWtFL8Hmd5Xo62I7t-Vxm8tmXIKfy156InSVZSCD4qi3rknsGYr-7Oj69WGU8PIJZ6VFi0V1xJ6SqLvqCPHdDvs/s320/Haul+Art+10-2013.jpg" width="320" /></a>The other two are a really rocker-looking heart shaped set of prints, which seem to almost move as you look at them, due to some funny tricks with the color registration (how the colors line up). They are both four-color prints, and they have completely illegible artist signatures. They seem to be inspired by the work of Andy Warhol, but I don't think he made them (the signature does not match what I was able to find online). I have not removed them from the frames to figure out what kind of prints they are. If you recognize these artists, I'd love to hear from you! <br />
<br />
Well, I've spent enough time bragging about my "haul," so I'm going to sign off and go find some boxes. :)<br />
<br />
What piqued your interest the most? What would you like to see listed first? Of course, what can you tell me about the things I have here? I'd love to hear from you!</div>

It's been way too long since I've updated here about my pom pom menagerie, but I have been very busy. I've been making a whole lot of pom pom critters for everyone and thought it might be a good time to share. My best-sellers so far this season have been black poodle ornaments!<br />
<br />
In fact, I have six half-finished poodles on my craft table right now, as of writing this, and they are headed out of the US when I get them done! <br />
<br />
I have also rolled out one new pom pom creature, a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/158447795/blue-bear-christmas-ornament-with-red?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">blue bear wearing a winter scarf</a>. I have made it possible to order a polar bear in white as well (of course, with a red scarf like this). I don't have a picture up yet, but it will look just like this in pure white.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMhS42a9DjYPakWmXNS8G8mnSTTPp_rLoqQL9W1rTQHLqZHh0OjYg-UgnL4TsGC8G7qbZUqgKm4fXw9nuWQD6ZpfiT9-cnzru_UyI0Pcuy7LwnM2nZkMf6jGSwRJ_vF1TUxD0HNZorgnA/s1600/BlueBearMain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="325" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMhS42a9DjYPakWmXNS8G8mnSTTPp_rLoqQL9W1rTQHLqZHh0OjYg-UgnL4TsGC8G7qbZUqgKm4fXw9nuWQD6ZpfiT9-cnzru_UyI0Pcuy7LwnM2nZkMf6jGSwRJ_vF1TUxD0HNZorgnA/s400/BlueBearMain.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Making this new pom pom creature ornament taught me a few new design tricks, which I intend to put to good use in a few other designs that have stumped me for years.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizB27zj4wSxvpQtr3VWX1_FiUUA7hX5EWzythgK_17G7_P70j53qwiNEAga96weTtjrNcEcY7wYad5gNvBrYfrGYhrgbU_CCNiSxMGF3y1Oo1tNMgMsztys8EigPBaoSdeFVDs_hAaW7M/s1600/DSCN7438+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizB27zj4wSxvpQtr3VWX1_FiUUA7hX5EWzythgK_17G7_P70j53qwiNEAga96weTtjrNcEcY7wYad5gNvBrYfrGYhrgbU_CCNiSxMGF3y1Oo1tNMgMsztys8EigPBaoSdeFVDs_hAaW7M/s200/DSCN7438+(2).JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
What you may not know is that I tend to have a collection of alien-looking "failed creatures" on my table all the time. My biggest "fail" of late is a crouching silver fox. Well, it should have looked like a silver fox, but just looks like "some kind of animal." Sorry, I don't have any pictures.<br />
<br />
I also have a kitty that has some issues with its hind legs. You may have seen this photo on my Facebook page and wondered where it went. I feel uncomfortable about offering it for sale under the current design, because it acts like it might fall apart at any moment. That is just against my personal crafting code of ethics! I think I may have figured out a way to fix it, though. I really hope so. It is time for kitty lovers to get some attention, too.<br />
<br />
First, I've got to finish some poodles and such.<br />
<br />
Have you cracked out the Christmas music yet? It's time to get in the spirit. I stopped by my local craft store to stock up a couple of weeks ago, and they were already playing "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" on the intercom. I wasn't sure whether I should feel excited or a little stressed. Christmas is my favorite holiday, but there is a lot of preparation still needing to be done! I guess I hadn't realized it was this close already.<br />
<br />
Have a good week, everyone!<br />

Hey everyone! Long time, no see, right? I've been really busy stocking the shops and training for my new part-time job, but I thought that I should spend some time today updating you about what is going on at Candy Apple Crafts these days.<br />
<br />
Since fall is technically here (it doesn't feel much like it, though), I've been trying to get as much fall and winter themed vintage up in the shops as I possibly can. This is a good time to start shopping for the holidays, and preparing for the cold months.<br />
<br />
Etsy has the best selection of Halloween themed items in my vintage collection. I have a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/157406363/childrens-animal-costume-pattern-size-2?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">children's animal costume pattern</a> (for a very young child) from the 70s. It's itty-bitty, which means the finished costume would be absolutely adorable! I also have a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/157392090/medical-oddity-nichols-nasal-syphon-in?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">rather spooky piece of medical equipment</a> from the 1910s, designed to frighten away your nasal drip problem. It is still in the box, for display only, and probably was never used. I also have a set of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/127259096/owl-face-macrame-beads-ceramic-eyes-and?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">ceramic owl face macrame beads</a> (you can use them with crochet or on a stuffed toy, I'm sure), and a few other things. I hope you'll stop by!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://img0.etsystatic.com/021/1/5695926/il_570xN.488997960_sjoj.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/021/1/5695926/il_570xN.488997960_sjoj.jpg" width="300" /></a>I also took the time to make a couple of not-so-spooky Halloween monster figurines. These will probably end up being "one offs," which means one-of-a-kind items. The first is a furry-toed monster pigeon. This idea came from a random search that came in to my Etsy store, under the keywords, "Furry-toed monster." I decided I would make something for anyone else who came to my store looking for that. So, eventually, it turned into this clawed and scaled monster pigeon....don't ask me why. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://img0.etsystatic.com/020/0/5695926/il_570xN.488997958_bgco.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/020/0/5695926/il_570xN.488997958_bgco.jpg" width="158" /></a>Basically, this is just me letting my imagination and my crafting scissors go wild! Don't worry. The claws look sharp, but they are very flexible plastic. <br />
<br />
This <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/159263226/furry-toed-monster-pigeon-figurine?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">furry-toed monster figurine</a> can stand up on its own, but I'm pretty sure it would not hold up under rough child's play.<br />
<br />
So, after I had so much fun making that one, I decided to make something a little more in keeping with the retro monster movies theme. You all know how much I enjoy retro things! Since I don't take myself too seriously around here, I chose to reference the movie that makes fun of monster movies--Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://img0.etsystatic.com/022/0/5695926/il_570xN.489322202_pfyk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/022/0/5695926/il_570xN.489322202_pfyk.jpg" width="348" /></a>Mine looks rather convincingly like a tomato on the back (and I'm pretty proud of myself for that), but it has a comically menacing expression on its face. It's all cartoon and no bite!<br />

Since last time I posted here, I've hardly had more than a few days of "normal routine" at a time, which is something I hope to change this month. The second week of May was pleasantly disrupted with my sister's graduation, but the third and fourth weeks were shut down with prolonged power outages following tornadoes that swept through my area on May 20th and May 31st.<br />
<br />

<br />
It was a helpless feeling, not being able to contact anyone or know what was going on in the outside world. I missed you, my fans and readers, as well. I can't complain, though. I still have my house and friends and family are still with me. I've been blessed.<br />
<br />
People keep asking me how they can help with the disaster efforts. I would say that first, prayers are extremely welcome and needed. The worst scars from a situation like this are the emotional and spiritual ones. There is also still a great need for donations to charities like the <a href="http://www.redcross.org/ok/oklahoma-city" target="_blank">Oklahoma Red Cross</a>, <a href="http://centraloklahomahabitat.org/" target="_blank">Habitat for Humanity</a>, <a href="http://convoyofhope.org/" target="_blank">Convoy of Hope</a>, and even the <a href="http://www.okhumane.org/" target="_blank">Oklahoma Humane Society</a>. It will be a long time before things get back to normal for thousands of displaced people, but I fear they will be forgotten by the public long before they are back on their feet. <br />
<br />
Meanwhile, I'm trying to get back into the swing of things, because like so many others, I've been a little shell-shocked since all of this happened. I plan to go back to listing new merchandise as soon as possible, so keep an eye out on my stores. Thanks for reading!</div>

<br />
I've been going through my vintage stock and my craft room and making a lot of plans for some changes in my stores--the first being a plan to dramatically increase my inventory in all of my stores by the end of the summer.<br />
<br />
I was recently inspired by an article someone sent me to read, that spoke of turning loose of craft supplies that I'm not using, so that someone else can enjoy them. I'm one of those people who tries a lot of different kinds of crafts, but sometimes gives up on them after I've bought the supplies. Yeah, I bet a lot of people are thinking, "I must be that kind of person, too." Not a problem! Now you know you're normal, right? <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLlyZ-fYKoBsCLwWOi6uQyHVUMhxGHI46Xt3jyzS39F-MMT7mp64CvQR1NRPcPEAjnz15XQzAsPIXkKGDTpwvmCQ-B3VjBu1bQuiTgKpmXdPJDh_U04Jc8GhDAr1Xmbi9S9o_Eyc0VM3o/s1600/WhiteMercerizedCottonThreadDestashMain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="151" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLlyZ-fYKoBsCLwWOi6uQyHVUMhxGHI46Xt3jyzS39F-MMT7mp64CvQR1NRPcPEAjnz15XQzAsPIXkKGDTpwvmCQ-B3VjBu1bQuiTgKpmXdPJDh_U04Jc8GhDAr1Xmbi9S9o_Eyc0VM3o/s200/WhiteMercerizedCottonThreadDestashMain.jpg" width="200" /></a>Anyway, once I've bought the supplies, I feel guilty about quitting. I end up hanging on to them, when I could be making another crafter happy instead. In order to keep good stuff from languishing any longer, I've gathered some of it up and I've started listing it, today. It seemed like a good time, since people will likely be thinking ahead to "Christmas in July" craft bazaar sales and craft shows during the summer, and they might even be stocking up for projects for the holidays. If you do those sorts of things, stop by. I've already got a bit of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CandyAppleCrafts?section_id=7356390" target="_blank">crochet and embroidery stock available in my Etsy store</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUOgpkp8iNnA33J9cVcCiu4gtgBvsIE90JDOtJUeayLMgEE7kL-gh8vYx1j4mKxMa3sfGIAvuGhckmE3Uz0KekLIarb7qzJDQ1yvxySVYnBhSaeo7YzkV61Uj7yjrBihWoHG45yxsX9no/s1600/BlueMiliBraceletMain2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUOgpkp8iNnA33J9cVcCiu4gtgBvsIE90JDOtJUeayLMgEE7kL-gh8vYx1j4mKxMa3sfGIAvuGhckmE3Uz0KekLIarb7qzJDQ1yvxySVYnBhSaeo7YzkV61Uj7yjrBihWoHG45yxsX9no/s320/BlueMiliBraceletMain2.jpg" width="320" /></a>Taking stock of my craft supplies caused me to rediscover my jewelry making supplies, and <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/CandyAppleCrafts/1/7/53015//" target="_blank">I've made several pieces of jewelry this week</a>. I'm listing what I've made on Artfire. Hope you'll take a look. It's a small selection, so far, but I am adding more to the store as I go.<br />

Recent customers have told me how they had combed the internet for days until they finally discovered what I had. It is time to make those treasures available to all of you! I've listed vintage glass and pottery, and even some cool home decor like this <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/150021557/mothers-day-music-box-red-flowers-glass?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">music box</a>, which plays the "Laura" theme song from Dr. Zhivago while the flowers rotate under the glass dome. If you are looking for something specifically, I hope you'll let me know. The worst I could tell you is "no, I don't have it." I won't be mean about it. <br />

So, do you have the spring cleaning bug this time of year? If so, please share tips. I'd love to read them!</div>

Scarves have been a rising trend in women's apparel over the past few years. It's no wonder, either. Besides being a wonderful way to draw the eye up to your face, they are a colorful way to shrink your clothes budget by transforming those boring old outfits you've had hanging in your closet for years.<br />
<br />
If you are worried about the potential dry-cleaning bill associated with vintage silks, there are plenty of washable alternative fabrics, including rayon, nylon, polyester, and cotton. I've even found specially treated acetates and silks that are designed to be hand-washed at home!<br />
<br />
If luxury is still what you prefer, there are "dry cleaning at home" kits like the ones produced by Dryel brand (and no, no one is paying for that endorsement).<br />
<br />

</tbody></table>
When it comes to caring for a vintage scarf, there are only a few rules to remember:<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li> <b>Too much wringing and vigorous scrubbing can stretch a scarf out of shape or even tear the fibers.</b> The lighter the fabric, the higher the likelihood of this happening. Wash them in a delicates bag if you are putting them in your machine, and be careful when hand-washing.</li>
<li><b>Never use bleach or harsh chemicals when laundering (I usually use Woolite).</b> This is especially important for older scarves or scarves made with natural dyes. The dyes in these scarves are often less "fixed," and the wrong chemical can make dyes run and ruin the fibers in the scarf, as well. Some acetate and silk cannot be washed at all without being completely ruined. <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFmUIcbP14jw-doXJX9ZcFztgproy0FIVOItK81XGbRoaZYt5kQVSfkWKdHm9XdfOxQumfUlAUsACftAzNzGMrKrRVfepycZlSvkDG16LnNmITIhh2v0Jo9VN8nM6fTMLkjxIoTCEyZn0/s1600/ScarfTanTealVioletsSwirl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFmUIcbP14jw-doXJX9ZcFztgproy0FIVOItK81XGbRoaZYt5kQVSfkWKdHm9XdfOxQumfUlAUsACftAzNzGMrKrRVfepycZlSvkDG16LnNmITIhh2v0Jo9VN8nM6fTMLkjxIoTCEyZn0/s320/ScarfTanTealVioletsSwirl.jpg" width="255" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tan Chiffon with Violets Scarf</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</li>
<li> <b>Iron most scarves on low temperatures</b> to avoid overheating the delicate fibers and causing them to become breakable over time.</li>
<li><b>Never pin a scarf in place. </b>Each time you pin it, it makes a tiny hole. Many of the scarves I list have endured this treatment (I always note it when I see it). Too much of that, and the fabric gets snagged and ruined.</li>
<li><b>Don't knot the scarf too vigorously, as well. </b>I've found that in the gauziest fabrics, like chiffon, this makes ripples and vertical "slit" patterns in the fabric, like stretch marks, where the very fibers of the cloth have been scooted closer together. This opens them up for snags and runs, as well.</li>
<li><b>Store natural fabrics like silk and cotton in a closed drawer or some place where insects can't get to them,</b> because moth babies see them as a delicacy (and if you wanted holes, you would have bought lace, right?).</li>
</ul>
Since the demand for scarves has been pretty high this week in my
stores, I've risen to the challenge. I prepped nearly a dozen vintage
scarves and started listing them over the weekend. They have already
begun to sell, so don't wait to check them out! I picked out a variety
of colors, fabrics, and price ranges, to try to have something for
everyone. Here's a centralized link to all my stores, through <a href="http://pinterest.com/candyapplcrafts/candyapplecrafts-things-to-love/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>. Otherwise, just use the tabs at the top of the screen on this blog.<br />
<br />
This post is loaded with pictures of what I have listed
(or am listing this week). There is also one vintage scarf I am
reserving, just in case it wins in my <b>"Fan's Choice" Giveaway Contest</b>.
If that's what you'd like to see me give away, you should go vote in
the poll I am running on my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CandyAppleCrafts" target="_blank">Facebook fan page</a>. If you vote, you will be
entered to win in the final drawing. Hope to see you there!<br />

My year kicked off with some bad news on the home front, which explains my long silence here on the blog. To fill in my blog readers, back in January, my dog suddenly fell ill and had to be put down due to a type of canine cancer called hemangio sarcoma. Obviously, it's going to take some time to recover from that. I still miss him a lot.<br />
<br />
Now spring is slowly starting to show itself in my part of the country, and it's bringing new beginnings along with it. I think I need that.<br />
<br />
I've been stocking my stores with brightly-colored vintage, and some of it is selling as fast as I can list it. I've been doing some "spring cleaning" around here, as well. That means lowering prices where I can, reassessing shipping costs, and even reconsidering which items are in which stores. Now is a good time to snag some fun stuff!<br />

Two of my stores (Artfire and Etsy) have taken on a decidedly kid-friendly, brightly colored retro feel, which I think I intend to develop throughout the year. I really hope to get back into crafting new animals for you all, as well as listing new vintage regularly.<br />
<br />
Currently, I've got a lot of new children's patterns up on Artfire, such as this one, which makes sleeping clothes for toddler size 1. It's from the 70s (and so are most of my other patterns).<br />
<br />

</tbody></table>
I've also stocked things like this little Enesco duck figurine over in my Etsy store.<br />
<br />
Really, I'm going for all the color I can get over there, getting ready for the Easter season and summer, after that. I hope you'll come and see what I've got. I'm trying to shift my Etsy store to offerings exclusively from the 40s through the 70s, to go along with the theme of my pom pom poodles and other animals. It's looking great already!<br />
<br />
Hope to hear from you soon. It's going to be a bright year. I just know it.</div>

In many places, people are celebrating Boxing Day, a holiday that was originally a way of acknowledging and thanking the hired help for their service. These days, there are frequently sales taking place on this day. This year, I decided to give that a try!<br />
<br />
I have established "After Christmas Sale" sections in my stores.<br />
<br />
<h1>
Etsy Markdowns</h1>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNuqAN-p1Uq26BBMXe1C9ne7pDjCCsp-3VrPr2gKqKRjLP2CAovHpb_zmbvO7JcliSJx21kbLxoB_fPAyGwGmLgqMBS_TrXVk8EVWJ4vgsVsqAbk24PPUIJ7LzPfVOoAmf-_eAzqdOTXY/s1600/VeggiePaintedWallPlaqueMain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNuqAN-p1Uq26BBMXe1C9ne7pDjCCsp-3VrPr2gKqKRjLP2CAovHpb_zmbvO7JcliSJx21kbLxoB_fPAyGwGmLgqMBS_TrXVk8EVWJ4vgsVsqAbk24PPUIJ7LzPfVOoAmf-_eAzqdOTXY/s320/VeggiePaintedWallPlaqueMain.jpg" width="184" /></a></div>
Prices on <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/CandyAppleCrafts" target="_blank">Etsy</a> already reflect the markdowns. Some things were marked down 10%, some 15%, some 20%, some with free shipping, and some with free shipping plus 20% off!<br />
<br />
Markdowns include items from practically every other section in my store, including books, wall art, and some Christmas ornaments. This "veggie" cutting board shaped wall hanging is currently on sale for about $8. <br />
<br />
I hope you will go and browse. There are some good deals to be had.<br />
<br />

Markdowns on Artfire</h1>
<br />
<br />
On <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/CandyAppleCrafts" target="_blank">Artfire</a>, I have a similar markdown section. Here, I have activated coupons, which expire January 5th, and have marked several things with free shipping already. The scarves (such as the one below) and many of the lightweight items in the section are eligible for a 30% off coupon, while the rest are eligible for the 20% off coupon.<br />
<br />

<br />
<h1>
Sales on eCrater</h1>
At present, I don't have any markdowns set up on eCrater, but if there is something you really want a discount for, please just ask. I'm pretty open to reasonable offers over there, because I am trying to get established on that venue.
<br />
<h1>
Sale Ends January 5th</h1>
<br />
This sale, and all applicable coupons and markdowns, is going away the weekend after New Years Day, January 5th. After that, prices will be returning to pre-Christmas levels, and some items in the category may be removed from the stores and either listed elsewhere, or taken offline permanently. <br />
<br />
I will be adding new inventory as well, while the sale is going on, and may be adding more items to the sale categories (especially if things are selling quickly). Check out what I have, ask questions if you have any, and visit often! I'd love to have your business this season.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Get Your Orders in Now...Procrastinators Beware!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Since multiple people have contacted me about this today, I stopped in to let everyone know the wait times for shipping in the US, in case you wanted something in my stores but were afraid you couldn't get it in time.<br />
<br />
For the ornaments, or lightweight items like them--items marked "first class domestic mail" in the description--the very, very, very last-minute day to ship is <b>December 20th</b>. I recommend on the handmade things that you get your orders in to me the day before, or two days if you buy a large number of things, to give me time to make your orders. I do not want a traffic ticket on December 20th trying to get your orders to the post office in time!<br />
<br />
For the heavyweight items--items marked "parcel post" in the description--you have until <b>December 14th</b>.<br />
<br />
It is too late to ship books at book rate--"media mail"--in time for Christmas. Contact me ahead of time and I will change the shipping for you to something faster but more expensive.<br />
<br />
If you wait too long, I can attempt to get expedited shipping for you on all of it, but it will cost you, big time. So, don't do that to yourself. You will thank me!<br />
<br />
Until next time, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!</div>
